Uhle’s Tobacco Company is proper old-school American pipe-shop royalty. John H. “Jack” Uhle opened the shop in downtown Milwaukee in 1939, originally at 232 W. Michigan Street. Jack would sit right up front repairing pipes and hand-blending tobacco for customers — back when a tobacconist was actually expected to know what the hell he was doing.
By the 1950s, Uhle’s had grown beyond the storefront and was wholesaling both pipes and tobacco throughout the Midwest. The shop later moved to Wisconsin Avenue, where it remains today. In 1982, Jack sold the business to longtime employees Jim and Jeff Steinbock, who kept the old Uhle traditions rolling.
Now, the interesting part for pipe guys: Uhle’s-branded pipes were shop pipes, not necessarily pipes physically made by Uhle’s itself. Milwaukee’s Albert-John Briars is documented as having produced shop pipes for Uhle’s, using old American pipe-making machinery originally associated with Arlington Briar Pipes of Brooklyn. Albert-John operated that equipment until the company closed in 1987.
That means an estate stamped Uhle’s can be a genuine piece of Milwaukee tobacconist history rather than just another anonymous stamped import. Depending on age, some were American-made contract pipes produced specifically for the shop, while Uhle’s also retailed imported pipes and distributed a wide range of briars through its wholesale business.
Uhle’s real fame, though, has always been the tobacco. Their old blends — particularly the burleys — have developed an almost cult following. Blend 00, 255, 300-series mixtures, and Bishop’s Move are names longtime pipe smokers still know, and the shop has been blending tobacco continuously for generations.
So an old Uhle’s pipe has a little more meat on the bone than your average forgotten house brand. It comes out of one of America’s surviving pre-war tobacconists, tied directly to Milwaukee’s own pipe-making history.
Not some fancy English pedigree — just a damn good American pipe-shop story, made back when the fellow selling you the pipe might’ve been the same fellow who fixed it when you dropped the bastard.
