Colossal is one of those wonderfully obscure mid-century French marques that tends to fly completely under the radar. The French-made examples are typically substantial, traditional shapes, often stamped “Custom Made,” “First Quality,” and “Algerian Briar” alongside the France designation.
The exact factory behind them remains a bit of a mystery, but collector research points toward production in the French pipe-making trade, likely around the Saint-Claude orbit, with some examples reportedly imported into the U.S. by major pipe importer Bernie Hochstein. Colossal was also used on Italian-made pipes, so that Made in France stamp matters.
The good French examples have a reputation for being big, stout smokers made from Algerian briar, with classic shaping and plenty of old-school character. They aren’t a prestige collectible name, but they can be surprisingly well-made pipes for something most smokers have never heard of.
A proper sleeper from the golden age of French briar—big pipe, good wood, almost no hype attached to the name.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
