Alright boys, this one is stupid good. So good, in fact, that it deserves it own drop.
Every now and then a pipe lands on the bench that makes you quit moving for a minute, pour a little whiskey, turn it over in your hand about twenty times and just grin like a jackass.
This is that pipe.
Poul Ilsted is one of the heavy hitters of the Danish school. A W. O. Larsen alumnus under Former alongside Jess Chonowitsch, Teddy Knudsen, Tonni Nielsen, and Peter Hedegaard. One of the finest straight-grain carvers Denmark ever produced, Ilsted built his reputation on bold shapes, killer proportions and the kind of grain work that makes pipe nerds start talking with their hands.
And this one has all of it.
Big sweeping freehand shape. Long, muscular shank. Beautiful contrast through the extension and stem. Tight straight grain running up the bowl like it was told exactly where to go, with birdseye showing up right where you want it. The whole thing has that classic Danish thing going on where it’s elegant, a little weird, and somehow completely badass all at the same time.
Then you get to the scarcity.
Ilsted pipes are collectible.
Great Ilsted pipes are scarce.
A big straight-grain freehand like this? That is straight-up unicorn sh!t.
These do not just wander onto the market. You can watch for a long damn time and never see another one with this combination of size, shape, grain and presence. This is the sort of pipe that makes serious collectors lean forward and start asking questions.
And man, it has presence.
This isn’t some delicate little shelf queen you’re afraid to breathe on. It looks like something you ought to be smoking on a porch at midnight with two fingers of good bourbon, telling lies with your buddies and periodically stopping the conversation to say, “Man… look at this frikin thing.”
Because that’s exactly what it does.
It’s a serious piece of Danish pipe making history from one of the greats, and it shows off exactly why Poul Ilsted earned that reputation.
Poul Ilsted. Straight grain. Freehand. Unicorn. Unobtanium.
There are pipes you can replace.
This ain’t one of ’em.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
