Poul Hansen is one of those names that separates pipe collectors from pipe guys. He never achieved the celebrity of Sixten Ivarsson, Former, or Jess Chonowitsch, but among people who know Danish pipes, Hansen has long been respected as one of the finest second-generation artisans.
Interestingly, Hansen didn’t come into pipe making through woodworking. He was a highly skilled toolmaker and machinist who built equipment for some of Denmark’s most prestigious pipe houses, including Pipe-Dan and W.O. Larsen. That precision background shows in his work. His drilling is consistently excellent, his stem work is first-rate, and his pipes have that effortless Danish flow that looks simple until you try to carve one yourself.
Early in his career he spent time learning from Sixten Ivarsson, and you can absolutely see that influence. Hansen avoided gimmicks. His pipes weren’t about wild freehands or exaggerated flourishes—they were about proportion, balance, grain, and engineering. Even his more organic shapes always feel restrained and intentional.
Unlike many Danish makers, Hansen never produced pipes in large numbers. Much of his work was exported to the United States, Germany, and Japan, where it quietly built a loyal following. Later, after purchasing Copenhagen’s Danish Pipe Shop, his own production slowed even further. That’s one of the reasons authentic Hansen pipes are genuinely scarce today.
You’ll most often encounter stampings reading HANSEN BRIAR HANDMADE, although HANSEN PIPE HAND CUT, like yours, is also a legitimate stamping. A few pipes carry the MEMORIAL designation, which collectors generally regard as a higher grade, though Hansen never officially documented what separated it from his standard production.
Today, Poul Hansen occupies a sweet spot in the market. He’s respected enough that knowledgeable collectors actively hunt his work, but he still doesn’t have the household-name premium attached to some of the bigger Danish legends. That means his pipes often represent excellent value for the quality you’re getting.
If I see a clean Hansen on an estate table, I’m not hemming and hawing over it. That’s the kind of pipe you buy first and figure out the rest later. There just aren’t many of them floating around anymore, and every year a few more disappear into collections where they aren’t coming back out. That’s usually a pretty good sign you’re looking at the real deal.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
