Sandor Herskovitz was an American artisan based in Flushing, New York, whose briar pipes carried a healthy dose of personality. Accounts place him carving and selling pipes in a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, public park during the late 1950s and early ’60s; newspaper coverage documents him working the national arts-and-crafts circuit in the 1970s.
His work ranged from rugged, organically shaped freehands to remarkably detailed sculptural pipes. Boots, shoes, bare feet, cameras, and even a vertebra found their way into his carving repertoire. His years selling shoes supplied inspiration for some of those unusual designs, while individual commissions gave him fresh subjects to tackle.
The freehands show another side of the same imagination: expressive shaping, textured surfaces, and the natural character of the briar. Herskovitz belongs to that colorful generation of independent American carvers who brought their work directly to smokers, often demonstrating their craft along the way. Handmade briar with an artist’s eye and enough character to hold its own in any pipe rack.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
