Bjørn Thurmann is one of those Danish makers that serious collectors know, even if the broader market doesn’t. He never achieved the fame of Chonowitsch or Former, but his pipes have earned a reputation for first-rate craftsmanship, excellent engineering, and honest value.
Born in 1946, Thurmann grew up in his family’s Copenhagen tobacconist, later worked at Dunhill’s Duke Street shop in London and Iwan Ries in Chicago, then opened his own workshop in 1976. That background as both a tobacconist and pipe maker shows in his work.
His style is classic Danish: graceful lines, beautiful grain orientation, restrained shaping, and hand-cut stems. More importantly, his engineering is consistently excellent. His pipes are known for drilling that’s spot-on and for being dependable, effortless smokers.
For collectors, Thurmann sits in one of the sweetest spots in the market. His name still flies under the radar compared to Denmark’s biggest stars, so prices remain reasonable despite the quality. You’re buying a true handmade Danish artisan pipe without paying the premium attached to more famous names.
If a clean Thurmann crosses my bench at the right price, I wouldn’t think twice. He’s the kind of maker experienced collectors quietly seek out while everyone else is chasing bigger names. Around here, that’s like buying good ranch land before the highway gets built.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
