There are English pipe makers, and then there’s Charatan. Founded in London in 1863 by Frederick Charatan, Charatan was doing fully hand-made briars before most of the competition had even figured out what briar could become. The famous stamp “Charatan’s Make” wasn’t marketing fluff—it meant the pipe was carved from a raw block all the way to the finished stem under one roof, something almost nobody else in England was doing at the time.
By the time Reuben Charatan took over, Charatan had become the benchmark. In fact, a young Alfred Dunhill bought Charatan-made pipes to sell in his own shop before Dunhill became Dunhill. That’s how respected they were.
Collectors tend to chase the Family Era and Lane Era pipes—the years when Charatan was turning out those wild, organic freehands, oversized bowls, and impossibly good grain that made American collectors lose their minds in the 1960s and 70s. The best examples feel almost Danish before the Danes took over the hobby: asymmetrical, alive in the hand, and carved to follow the grain instead of a factory template.
A great Charatan has that unmistakable combination of English engineering and artistic swagger. They’re not as buttoned-up as a Dunhill, not as eccentric as some freehand Danes—just sitting right in the sweet spot. When collectors talk about the giants of English pipe making, Charatan isn’t on the list. Charatan is one of the reasons the list exists.

My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
