Chap was introduced in the 1920s by Chapel Frères in Saint-Claude, the birthplace of the briar pipe industry. The brand later passed through Gefapip before becoming part of the Berrod-Regad group in 1988. It never had the international reach of Chacom or Butz-Choquin, but it earned a reputation as a solid French factory pipe.
Chap pipes are exactly what you’d expect from old Saint-Claude production: classic shaping, good engineering, and dependable smoking qualities. They were built for everyday use, not to show off a spectacular block of briar, and that’s part of their charm.
Because the name isn’t well known outside France, collectors often overlook them. That keeps prices comfortably low, with most estates bringing $30–80, though exceptional older examples can do better. They’re not especially rare—they’re just underappreciated.
Chap is one of those brands I’d buy on condition rather than on the stamp. If the drilling is good and the pipe’s been cared for, you’ve got yourself a heck of a smoker for not much money. Sometimes flying under the radar is exactly what makes a brand worth chasing

My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
