Poul Hansen was a mid-20th-century Danish pipe maker whose work sits in that classic era when Copenhagen was one of the world’s pipe-making capitals. He started life as a very skilled toolmaker and machinist, which gave him a technical edge when he first encountered the workshops of legendary Danish houses like Pibe-Dan and W.Ø. Larsen around the 1960s.
Hansen largely taught himself, but his early efforts showed promise enough that the great Sixten Ivarsson took him under his wing, teaching him vital carving tricks that elevated his game. Over the late 1960s and into the ’70s he produced pipes that were well regarded internationally — especially in the U.S., Germany, and Japan — and catalogs from that era list his work in respectable price ranges for quality briar.
His pipes — often stamped “HANSEN / BRIAR / HANDMADE” and “MADE IN DENMARK” — are fairly rare today, since only limited numbers were sold and many stayed with collectors; folks familiar with them note they’re Danish in style with competent shaping and finish that reflects Hansen’s technical background and Ivarsson-taught skills.
In the larger picture of Danish pipemaking history, Hansen isn’t a giant like Erik Nørding or Tom Eltang, but he represents that generation of talented carvers who bridged artisan handwork and small-scale commercial distribution, and his pieces now turn up as desirable vintage Danish briars among collectors and smokers alike.

I combine shipping on orders over $40 in the continental US, just ask!
Measurements available upon request.
My shipping is a little more than some. I use UPS (unless it's going to a PO Box or non contiguous US) because UPS has a 98% success rate versus USPS at 87.5%. I have a dedicated UPS representative who goes above and beyond in the rare case there is a shipping issue. Three-ish dollars is worth the peace of mind in my opinion
