Pipes by Lee was an American pipe brand distributed by Stewart-Allen Co. in New York, with production dating back at least to the 1940s. The brand is best known for its distinctive star grading system, with standard production running from one through five stars in ascending quality.
Early Lee pipes used inset seven-point stars on the stem, followed by five-point stars in later production, while still later examples used simpler stamped gold-colored stars. The higher grades received better briar and finishes, with period catalogs showing Three Stars in virgin finishes and Four and Five Stars in natural-grain finishes.
